The Fourth Egg

Finally one of the youngest two hens have laid their first egg! Most exciting!! It's quite speckled so maybe it came from the speckled sussex Peach Chiclet. Or could it be pale like Buffy the buff orpington? Either way its' wonderful news!

Snowy hens

Despite the cold January temperatures, the hens were happy to explore outside when it snowed a bit.  They did stay close together and by the garage, probably hoping someone would bring them some dried corn treats.

Wonderful blog to view

Oh fun! This is a great blog and full of super photos and fun stories on the hens. Took me a while to see she was actually in LA, but the aloha and tiki themed coop are something to aspire to :

An update on the hens in winter

Miss Buffy is growing rapidly! We think she has now achieved largest hen status....though Little Red Hen (picture with her naked belly) still remains the leader despite having lost quite a lot of feathers after a near mishap with a neighbor's dog.

Fannie Mae allows the wee one to carry her around like a football.

Peach Chiclet (the speckled sussex) and her best buddy Buffy (the Buff Orpington) still need some help heading into the coop for the night. They don't complain much as long as treats like grapes or bits of cheese are involved.

Sounds like something we've heard before . . .

She Was a Very Masculine Hen

http://www.motherearthnews.com/the-happy-homesteader/she-was-a-very-masculine-hen.aspx

I am in hysterics!! This report in Mother Earth News is so familiar :) The hens are roaming around in the snow today and kicking up whatever bugs have been brave enough to come up to the sun patches. They don't seem to mind the cold at all. Thank goodness!
